Our communities deserve effective public-safety measures that are based on facts and sound research, not wasteful and counterproductive measures born of fear. We all want to be safe. We have to demand our legislators pass laws that work and actually keep us safe.
That’s especially true when it comes to sexual offenses. http://thehill.com/opinion/criminal-justice/357096-sex-offender-registries-endanger-the-lives-theyre-meant-to-protect?amp
This is an outstanding, logical, level headed article. So very true, and long overdue.
A good op-ed, written by our wonderful ally at ACLU-MI, and published in a publication widely read in D.C. This continuous drip, drip, drip of pieces putting forth the truth is so good to see, and I believe it will one day tip the scales in our favor. Between the courts and the media, change is coming.
I like the sound of Bellucci/Auckerman teaming up to bring this whole thing down!
What is needed is for someone to speak of a correlation between human sex trafficker and the fact that a publicly listed SORNA is nothing but a readily available potential list of customers for these people. They have the ability to search a geographic area, identify people by type of conviction and narrow down potential clients. Use the public’s own fear and irrational thought processes against them and create an outcry that the list should not be public. I know that it is not the case, but if people believe the recidivism rate is 80% then they would probably believe this too. Different approach and kind of out of box thinking but at this point every angle helps 🙂
